Lostine, Wallowa county, hidden away!

  6 votes

Lostine travelogue picture
My hometown is hidden at the base of the Beautiful Wallowa Mountians in Northeastern Oregon. There are about 250 people in the town and area, possibly less! We are part of a larger and breathtaking county where you can see some of the most beautiful alpine scenery in the world.

Favourite spots:
Wallowa Lake is a highlight of any trip here. It's 6 miles long, less that a mile wide and cold all the time. It is fed by snow and glaciers year 'round.

What's really great:
There is a gondola cable car that takes you up the face of Mount Howard. You can see the edge of Oregon from the top of this mountian and there are trails to hike, little critters all over the place and the views are spectacular!

Sights:
Zillions of them each more beautiful than the last! They also change depending on the time of year you are here. Snow covered to green to harvested, to muddy!

Accommodations:
Many hotels and B&B's in the area as well as several camp grounds and the state park camp ground are available.

Hangouts:
The Embers, the Lostine Tavern, the pub at the top of Mt. Howard...

Restaurants:
Everything from fine dining to fast food around the county. Wednesday night is taco night at the Lostine Tavern. Most places have weekend prime rib specials and a new Chinese food place has just opened it's doors.

Other recommendations:

Local towns have their own celebrations. Lostine has a yearly flea market, Wallowa a 4th of July party and a Pow-Wow, Joseph produces a yearly event known as Chief Joseph days with a rodeo and Native American events and Enterprise sponsors the Hells Canyon Mule days events. Wallowa Lake has their Alpenfest each September.

If you like fishing, hunting, hiking, skiing, camping, boating or small town America, this is the place to come!
