The heart of Spain

  10 votes

Madrid is a lively city that offers a lot more than art museums, a palace and the bull fights. During the day it's an interesting city to visit with some interesting architecture and a host of museums but much like other big cities nontheless. After 9:00 PM the whole character of the city changes and the real Madrid emerges. The tapas bars start filling with patrons and most of the locals start strolling the city. By midnight the city is at full speed. The the bars, restaurants and night clubs are full and the streets are full of pedestrians. Madrid is awake.

Favourite spots:
The standard tourist fare such as Plaza del Sol, Plaza Majore, Palacio Real, El Prado are all enjoyable but my personal favorite pastime is sitting in one of the many sidewalk bistros enjoying an evening of churros y chocolade while people watching.

What's really great:
Madrid is a great walking city. It has good public transit as well but most of the high points of the city are within walking distance of each other. El Rastro bills itself as the world's largest fleamarket. It is enjoyable but remember it's also one of the world's top spots for pickpoctets. It's a real shame that Spain takes petty crime so lightly. As long as the pickpockets and other criminals continue to target only tourists and leave the locals alone, the authorities don't really seem to care.

Sights:
Royal Palace (Palacio Real), del Prado, El Rastro, Thyssen-Bornemisza museum

Accommodations:
Best Western Hotel Madrid near Plaza del Sol. Great location, nice hotel plus AAA and AARP discounts.

Restaurants:
Museo del Jamon(several locations). Local cured ham Mmmmmmm!

Other recommendations:
Easy day trips to Toledo, Jerez and other cities.
