Mersing travelogue picture
The surrounding areas of Mersing really do take you into areas where most tourists do not go. I still have yet to know why this place has not been capitalized on, such as their northern neighbor, Thailand. The beaches are beautiful, waters fairly clear and extremely warm. The jungles are thick with life and there is something to do for every type of person (with the exception of night clubbers). Easy drive north from Singapore that takes about four hours. Good roads, good road signs, little towns and villages all along the way for rest stops. Take Hwy 3 from Singapore and heading north, go east on Hwy 2172. This is the coastal route and more to see along the way, although if you stay on Hwy 3, it is still a nice route. You go through thicker jungles staying on 3. When you get to the coast, head north again toward Mersing.

Favourite spots:

It is best to stay at some of the beach areas just north of Mersing. Very relaxing and isolated. The beaches are incredibly beautiful here. We never, absolutely never saw anyone on the beach the entire time with the exception of a few people from the hotel we were at, a few local kids, and very few stragglers that passed our pay.

What's really great:
There is a lot and nothing to do. One can go treking in the jungles, lay on the beach, scuba dive, snorkle, drink, eat, rap with the locals, shop, well, you get the picture.

Accommodations:

Lots of hotels of all types. Fairly expensive to backpacker hostels. During busy season, it is good to call ahead just in case, but you will be able to find something at any time.

(Something went wrong with the system here...a shot of our great hotel with a beautiful garden is above!)

Nightlife:
The areas of north of Mersing, no clubs at all. In Mersing, there are some, but be alert...not the safest of areas actually in the city at night.

Restaurants:
Great food in Malaysia. Mersing has a mix of the whole countries main dishes.
