Smart is not always alive. I found Mombasa a very exciting place to visit. The Likoni ferry is an experience not to miss. The ambience in the main shopping area is very mixed. I wonder how they photograph the famous tusks?
Having been there many years ago, when I came back in 2004, it had evolved into a very busy, bustling, dusty city. The most surprising aspect apart from the pot-holes, were the hundreds of satellite dishes! The potholes are now used as a measure against which I measure all others! Clean and ordered it is not, but happening and very active, it most certainly is. Well worth a visit.
Favourite spots:
Fort Jesus in the early morning is inspiring, and the carved doors in the old city are what I went around spotting - love old doors and gates. Regret not taking a dhou ride round the harbour - might have added to the maritime aspect of the city.
What's really great:
Ice-cold beers in the heat of the day - ever one for contrasts. Accessibility to excellent beaches north and south of the city.
Accommodations:
I found the New Palm Tree Hotel on Nkrumah Road most agreeable. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Restaurants:
I enjoyed eating at the Geetanjali restaurant, always did like Indian food! The coffee at the Mombasa coffee house was surprisingly good too.
