Two islands south of Thailand

Located just south of the Thai border, the Perhentian Islands offer some great snorkling and decent scuba diving. There are two main islands...one is very secluded and only one main beach with several bungalo's tracing the beach. The other is more populated, but still you have the feeling of isolation. I was rather disappointed with the islands after spending five weeks in the Thai islands, but everyone we came across said they felt it was great.

That being said, I must stress it is all what you make of it. The islands are beautiful, but rather slow and not too eventful. I enjoy the laid back style, so it did suit me.

Favourite spots:

There are beautiful coral reefs dotting around the island. This allows for a lot of fish to see with little effort to find them. Several sharks breeds are in the area as well (non-aggressive for the most part!). Makes for an exciting snorkling/diving trip.

What's really great:

I liked the feeling of isolation. Not many people were found anywhere, but you still could go to a restaurant and find some western travelers/backpacker-s.

Accommodations:

There are a lot of places to stay for all price ranges throughout the islands. During busy season, you may want to book ahead while still on the mainland.

Nightlife:

None

Hangouts:
Few. Because Malaysia is primarily Muslim, it is hard to find alcohol here. We searched for an hour just to get a beer.

Restaurants:
Plenty, but little variety.

Other recommendations:
Make sure the boat drivers don't rip you off. When you buy your ticket on the mainland, they may try to charge you extra to get all the way to the island. The ship can only go so far because of coral and a little outboard comes to pick you up...they they try to charge you ten dollars to finish the trip.
