Positano and the Amalfi Coast

We visited the resorts of Amalfi, Positano, and the Emerald Grotto on a full day trip from Sorrento in May 2006. We arrived via bus along the Amalfi Coast (Stunning views and a bit scary for some), and returned via Boat (relaxing and quicker)

The Town of Amalfi
The Town of Amalfi
The Amalfi Coast is legendary for the stunning scenery and posh resorts. It clearly did not disappoint us on this trip. If arriving from Sorrento on the Bus that departs from in front of the train station, arrive early as there are no reserved seats and there is really no start of the line up, as the buses appear to stop at random location in front of the station. But the trip is clearly worth it. This windy cliff top road is truly an engineering marvel. I would suggest not driving it, as the attention required to navigate the turns would greatly diminish your ability to soak up the beautiful vistas. Our first stop was the Emerald Grotto that is just between Positano and the town of Amalfi. It is quite beautiful, if not a bit too touristy. The advantage of it over the Blue grotto in Capri is that you enter this one via a cave and not by Sea. Because of this you do not run the risk of not being able to enter the Blue Grotto because of rough sea conditions as happened to us. From here we went on to the town of Amalfi. Although there is no beach here the town was very pleasant and I believe that you could easily spend 2 or 3 very enjoyable days in this seaside town. There are a number of nice restaurants down on the waterfront and along the main street the climbs up the steep hill down the Center of town. Amalfi was once the leading maritime port in all of Italy before it cascaded falling into the Ocean killing nearly all of it's inhabitants. We had hoped to get up to Ravello but because of our stop at the Emerald Grotto we were short on time so decided to head back to Positano and spend the day on the relaxing there. Positano is a beautiful resort with two beaches. There are a large number of very nice and pricey restaurants here. The walk down the narrow streets from the bus top at the top of the town was very rewarding as it provided some stunning views and gave you a real appreciation for the steep incline that the town is built on.

Favourite spots:
The Beach at Positano

The Bus trip was very memorable. It was probably the highlight of the trip as it afforded some stunning views at every corner. In Amalfi, we enjoyed the relaxed feel of the town and spent several hours exploring the streets and doing a little shopping. In Positano, we enjoyed the beach. Although it was not soft and clean like a Caribbean beach the hillside town falling down to the waters edge was stunning. Spend a couple of Euros and rent a chaise lounge and umbrella, sip on a cold beer or a glass of wine and live large. Positano is indeed a beautiful and very chic place.

What's really great:
Amalfi Waterfont
Amalfi Waterfont
The ocean was great for swimming in. Although we visited in the last half of May we were pleasantly surprised with the water temperature. Although you could not classify it as tepid, it was warm enough to enjoy swimming in it. In Amalfi I also sampled an Italian specialty from a small street side Vendor that I ended up ordering throughout Ital the next several weeks. RICE BALLS came in a variety of flavors, were tasty, cheap, and allowed my to munch as I explored. We spent a lot of time on day trips and I would rather explore than send a couple of hours at a restaurant. DONT'T MISS LIST The bus to Amalfi The Boat from Amalfi to Sorrento The beach at Positano Shopping in Amalfi The Emerald Grotto Views, Sunshine, and Sand

Everywhere!!!!! One of the most beautiful places and exhilarating roads on Earth. Impossible to select just one or two favorite sights. The entire coast is a sight.

We stayed in Sorrento for 5 nights and used it as a base for exploring. We did the Amalfi Coast on a day trip. We left around 8:30 am and returned to Sorrento by about 7:30 pm.

You're right about the advantages of a bus. I remember driving it in !976 - and, yes, it does detract from the views.
