Sacramento: Fairly Boring

  15 votes
Sacramento is a hot, dry, conservative place. It's also the state capitol and has a very diverse, which is also very conservative, population. It's not very high on places to visit unless you like Dixieland music.

Sacramento, being in the Sacramento Valley, is centrally located in California. We're far enough away from the ocean to keep the summer heat in the brain baking section of the thermometer. But it's only around 100 F (38c) from June to October on average. It only snows about every 7 years.

Favourite spots:
Sacramento doesn't have much to offer itself. There's some clubs, the State Capitol, a train museum and a history museum. The art musuem isn't very good and they make it hard for live bands to play here. But Lake Tahoe, Reno and San Francisco are just a 2 hour drive away (when traffic isn't bad). For team sports, there's the Sacramento Rivercats (minor league baseball for the Oakland As) and the Kings (basketball). When Sacramentans are asked to vote on things such as favorite Mexican food Taco Bell always ranks high. Keep that in mind when you visit. Sacramento has been trying to improve it's image (it used to be known as The Meth Capitol of the World), but that's done in a mechanical heavy-handed way. Ted Kaczynski made Sacramento famous for sending his bombs from here and killing some locals.

What's really great:
Sacramento has two rivers -- the Sacramento River and the American River. The Sacramento Delta is a fun place to visit. Folsom Lake, Lake Natomas and Lake Berryessa (where the Zodiak Killer killed some people) are nearby. Speaking of serial killers, Sacramento has a long history of that. I like to think that since it is a boring town where you have to make your own fun, some people just go out wacking folks. There are two great art theaters. Tower (which the Sacramento City Council is trying hard to shut down) and The Crest (which the Sacramento City Council is trying to shut down in a mediocre way). It's about improving the city. There's some decent bookstores, and Sacramento has always been a long-time hangout for the Hells Angels. The Black Panthers also had an office here (like I said, it's very diverse).

Sights:
The Capitol Park has trees and a trout pond.

Accommodations:
Oddly enough, Sacramento has one hostel, which is supposed to be pretty nice. It's at 925 H Street.

Nightlife:
Lots of GLBT bars in the Pink Triangle around 20th and K. Faces (dance bar), Club 21 (lesbian bar), and the Mercantile (gay bar).

For live music, the Distillery on 21st and L is pretty good. Although it will probably be shut down soon.

Harlowes also has live music.

Hangouts:
Fox and Goose at 10th and R has great reasonably priced food. Live music on many nights.

Streets of London at 18th and K is pretty decent.

Restaurants:
There are wonderful Vietnamese and Thai restaurants out by Stockton and Florin.

Many decent Mexican restaurants are here, too. La Fiesta (Alhambra and L) is quick and good. El Camino (Broadway and 27) is pretty good and it serves drinks in huge glasses.

Other recommendations:
The K Street Mall has more insane people than most cities. As I've heard from visitors who grew up in Berkeley, California, we beat Telegraph for nuts.
