Vancouver - maybe the best city to live in (at least in summer, as there is a lot of rain in winter). Beaches at the Pacific, snow topped mountains, huge woods to hike and camp - all within 1 hour driving! And the people living here are said to be some of the friendliest in whole Canada.
Favourite spots:
English Bay - nice beach close to downtown
City: Broadway, Commercial Drive, 4th in Kits, Davie/Denman, Gastown, Wreck and Kitsiliano Beach and - no doubt about this - the Stanley Park.
What's really great:
It's so close to nature... and it just feels great to look at snow topped mountains while licking your icecream at the beach :-)
Sights:
After visiting all the City sights, take the chance to drive into nature! Go hiking, biking, snowboarding... The street to Whistler is beautiful: partly at the ocean, partly through the mountains...
Accommodations:
View from Queen Elizabeth Park towards downtown.
There is a hostel in Gastown which seems to be a good place to stay - somewhere near Hastings or Pender Street... it has a pub downstairs, which is a good place to be, but might be a source of constant noise...
Nightlife:
Fraser Arms - a strip club with no cover fee ;-) (don't take this too serious!)
Hangouts:
On Commercial Drive between 1st and Broadway, in Kitsiliano, in Gastown and on Davie you will find some pubs - choose your own favourite!
Restaurants:
White Spot (a diner chain which has great Burger), Mongolian BBQs (there are a few of them downtown, all serving cheap meals), Chinese (as there are a few 100k Chinese in Greater Vancouver you get superb chinese food here)
Other recommendations:
Vancouver Island is worth a visit, wreck beach can be fun in summer (a lot of weird people - clothes optional), Granville Island Market to buy cheap and fresh vegetables
