i vacationed there for two weeks, and the beaches were extremely beautiful, clear and relatively calm. Pretty peaceful, although it is a tourist hot spot.
Favourite spots:
can't remember that far back, but locals were very friendly, and most times we would just chill on the beach in the evenong, and sip some rum.
What's really great:
the freindliness of the people, the beautiful weather and the beaches. Some nice snorkelling to be done as well.

Accommodations:
i stayed at the Bellamar hotel, budget rooms across the street from the beach, in the middle of a cuban neighborhood, sort of away from the main hotel strips.
