Whitby for the unpretentious goth

  16 votes
Whitby is a small coastal Yorkshire town that hosts a Gothic Weekend twice a year. Picturesque ruins here inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula, and continue to impress.

Whitby by night
The Esk runs into the North Sea at the town of Whitby, which held a Christian synod in 664. The town itself is small, and its streets quite steep in places, but Whitby is definitely worth the effort of walking around it. The people are generally friendly, and even seem excited at the prospect of 1 000 goths descending upon them twice a year.

Favourite spots:
Ragnvaeig at the Abbey
Ragnvaeig at the Abbey
The Elsinore: a pub near Skinner Street is where WGW began

Whitby Abbey: 199 steps take you up to the ruins of a very impressive Abbey, and £4 (£3 for students!) lets you take a tour of the ruins. The views from Whitby Abbey and the St. Mary's churchyard are pretty spectacular, and any photos taken in the environs automatically get goth points.

Justin's in the Old Town: the best fudge and chocolates in the UK, and they specially make strawberry-filled chocolate coffins for goth weekend

The Spa/Whitby Pavilion: good venue for music on WGW

Captain Cook Museum: good naval history!

What's really great:
The size of Whitby means everything is within walking distance, and there is still plenty to do. There are many charity shops in which to find good clothing, and several pubs with good drink. Food is adequate but not spectacular. Accommodation is reasonable and plentiful, but book well in advance for WGW!

Sights:
The Abbey Arches
The Abbey Arches
Whitby Abbey and St. Mary's Churchyard (see above)

Capt. Cook Museum

Accommodations:
The Avalon Hotel on Royal Crescent, a decent B&B with a full English breakfast and clean rooms, overlooking Whitby Bay and the North Sea.

Hangouts:
The Elsinore is a small pub that likes to decorate for Halloween. WGW started here and they're quite welcoming to goths. Good ambience, if the music is a little weird.

Laughton's hosts 80's night. It's smaller than I'd like but the drinks are nice and cheap.

Restaurants:
Resolution serves a good jalfrezi, spicy enough for an American palate.

Monk's Haven is a nice tea room with a good seafood platter.

Whitby Tea Rooms has a cream soda you must taste, and their service is good.

Garriga's does Spanish cuisine and is so-so since the new management. Isn't spicy, but the portions are gi-normous.

Other recommendations:
One of the quayside amusement arcades has a pair of DDR machines!

This is a good start. If it had some more pics and info, you could easily get 4 or even 5 stars. Some pics of the Gothic buildings you mentioned would be a great!
