Hi, any thoughts on a young female traveling in India by herself? Is it safe? Or better still anyone in the same situation and want to join me :)? At the moment my plans are very lose, doing voluntary work in Uttaranchaluntil until mid december then either heading south or over to Nepal, Tibet till Jan/feb. Would love to hear from you!
I have no idea how safe or not safe it is to travel alone in India, but let's keep in contact. (I did South America alone- safe/not safe didn't really stop me much) I'm moving to Maldives next week and every three months I have some vacation time with a return ticket. I plan to do a LOT of trekking and backpacking in Asia in the next couple of years.
I was going to start in Sri Lanka the first trip (September) and the next one possibly to India. i was thinking about starting in the South. This would be January. I haven't made definite plans yet.
Let's talk

India is no more/less safe for female travellers than anywhere else in Asia (or the world). All the usual personal safety precautions should be made wherever you travel. The only real issue in India is the unwanted male harrassment that can often greet you on every corner. I've heard this is less so in the south but can't verify that.
Travelling with someone else can help you feel less vunerable and having the support of another person in telling people to go away can be a great resource. There are plenty of people travelling alone in India so the chance of finding someone when you are out there is pretty high.. you may just have to grin and bear it until then.
Having travelled extensively in Nepal and also visited Tibet, I can confidently say you will have no problems there -- in fact, you may not want to leave. It's a life changing experience for many people.
On the subject of India, I cannot comment but do point you to an excellent and entertianing book that will shed some light on what to expect from a female perspective:
HOLY COW! by Sarah MacDonald.
Ciao for now, or should I say, Namaste ...
