Nov 20, 2007 09:00 PM Heading to Toronto
Jenn & I flew to Toronto today, so I could attend a writing conference. We didn’t get in until almost 11pm, so we just went right to our hotel in Chinatown and went to sleep.

Sep 15, 2007 06:00 PM Day trip to Drumheller
The weather was great this morning (+22) with a projected high of +27, so we decided to hop in our car and get a better look at Drumheller.
We didn't go to the museum, but we did go for a walk in the badlands nearby. Then we ate a quick lunch and went ot explore the hoodoos. I've seen their pictures dozens of times, and I always expected them to be huge, but when we got there, they we only a little taller than me, maybe 2 metres tall.
Still, we put on our hiking boots and went for a walk/climb in the hills behind them after taking the obligatory pictures. I was really hot and we got back after maybe 30 minutes.

Aug 05, 2007 06:00 PM Off to Calgary
Instead of heading north, we decided to go back through the mountain parks and stop in Banff. There we did some hiking at Johnston Canyon and saw some amazing waterfalls.
Then we headed to Calgary to see some of our friends. We had dinner with them and then drove back home.

Aug 04, 2007 06:00 PM Exploring the mountain parks
We got up early, had breakfast and then went exploring. We saw Peyto Lake, Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, and the Bow Summit during the afternoon.
We began to head back around 4pm, but a bad car accident had closed the highway, so we went back into the park and drove to the Columbia Icefield. We hiked the Wilcox Pass trail, which took us to the top of a ridge directly across from the glacier. The first few hundred metres are all staight up, but after that The view, despite the twilight and clouds was amazing.
We went back down to the car and drove back several hours later. The highway was open again, but the remnants of three vehicles were still there, along with several emergency vehicles.
It was almost 9pm by the we got back and it rained all the way down the highway, but it seemed to taper off just before we got back to the campsite. We hurriedly prepared dinner and ate, expecting to get soaked any second. To our surprise, the storm never appeared until after we were tucked into our sleeping bags!

Aug 03, 2007 06:00 PM Nordegg and Saskatchewan River Crossing
We decided to go to David Thompson country for the August long weekend this year. We rented a site at David Thompson Campground. It is a great place, with a hot tub, swimming pool, showers, bathrooms, etc.
On our way there, we stopped at Rocky Mountain House National Historic Park, which was an old fur trading fort. We also got some pictures of Crescent Falls.
We made ourselves a quick dinner and then set up camp, by which time it was late, so we went to bed early, intending to explore the mountain parks first thing.

Apr 01, 2006 06:00 PM Time to go back home
Sadly, our long weekend was at an end and we had to head back.
We got in our car and began the long drive back. To break it up, we stopped for lunch in Banff. While there, we went for a walk at Lake Minnewanka. By the time we got to Calgary, it was time for dinner.
We finished late and I suggested staying overnight in a hotel. My companions wanted to get home for something the next day, so we left. Big mistake! Just north of Red Deer, we hit pea soup fog and had to slow to 50 km/h! It took us almost twice as long to get home as it should have...of course I said, I told you so several times!

Mar 31, 2006 06:00 PM More exploring
Today we got up earlier and headed south. We went to Cranbrook and explored the downtown, looking at a war memorial and some nice stone buildings. After a quick lunch, we headed to Kimberley.
Built originally by German/Austrian settlers, it had avery European feeling to it. In the centre of town, they had built the Plaatzl, a town square surrounded by buildings that looked right out of The Sound of Music. One ofthe funniest things was the clock. If you put a quarter into it, a little yodeller comes out, beer in hand, and starts yodelling.

Mar 30, 2006 06:00 PM Wandering around the Columbia Valley
We got up and had breakfast, and then wandered around the hotel. We went swimming, watched a movie and then had lunch.
Then it was off to explore. We found some hoodoos nearby, Columbia Lake and Columbia River.
By then, it was supper time and we headed back to the hotel.

Mar 29, 2006 06:00 PM Headed off to the Columbia Valley
Today I left Edmonton and headed into BC. Our friends had invited us to join them in Fairmont. It was a long drive (7+ hours), broken up by a stop in Calgary for a milkshake at Peter's and a few bathroom breaks here and there.
The drive through Kootenay National Park was very scenic. The mountain that had had the forest fire the previous summer was spectacular, covered lightly in snow with stark black trees jutting up.
After we got to Fairmont, we headed up the mountain and took a dip in the hot springs. It was very refreshing!

Mar 12, 2005 09:00 PM Back to Canada
Well, after a whirlwind trip of NW Europe, it's back to Canada. It was a times exhausting and frustrating, but it's still something I will never forget.
Who would have ever thought the only problems I would have on my trip would be through the one country where English was the native language?
I thought I'd run into stereotypical rude French people or would have trouble communicating in Belgium and the Netherlands where neither one of us spoke any of the languages there, but no, the only place I had negative experiences were in London.
Go figure!
Instead, the Belgians and Dutch we met we are very friendly and spoke great English, so it was easy getting our needs across. And the rude French? In over a week, we did not meet a single rude person in all of France. People helped us find our ways when we were lost, offered us rides, guided us to hotels, told us about great restaurants, laughed at our jokes, you name it. France is one place I will visit again in the future I can tell you that.
