Travel guide to Kinlochleven

At Ballachulish, near Glencoe, for many years there was only one route to the north, around Loch Leven, which made Kinlochleven a good point to break a journey. Then there were two developments in the early 20th century that changed its nature. In 1907 aluminium work started in Kinlochleven and created employment. In 1912 the car ferry started at Ballachulish and tourists could bypass Loch Leven on their way north.
However after the second world war the growth of traffic and everlasting queues at the ferry brought the Kinlochleven route back into substantial use. Both these developments have been reversed. A bridge was built at Ballachulish in the 70s to replace the ferry, thus again reducing tourist traffic through Kinlochleven and n 2000 the aluminium works closed, creating significant local unemployment. However a steam railway is planned on a 2foot 6 inch gauge to run on the tracks of the old works railway into the mountains, a tourist attraction providing some employment. [edit text] [editors]
