Todmorden is a small town on the border of Yorkshire with Lancashire. It’s a part of Calderdale [Yorkshire] but its address is Lancashire and its textile history, although it has both, is more related to cotton [Lancs] than to wool [Yorks].
It’s not regarded as a tourist town and accommodation is quite limited but there’s plenty to see in the immediate area.
The town’s history is related closely with that of the Fieldens, a local family with a 19th C reforming MP. There is a 19th C ‘castle’ built as the home of the reformer [but it never appealed to his wife], now owned by Buddhist monks. The lovely Centre Vale Park was his brother’s estate and the Italianate Town Hall was largely financed by the family.
There are numerous villages included in Todmorden on the hills that surround its centre. Mankinholes is a particularly attractive example, where most buildings date in part from Tudor times.
