European settlers on arriving fought the “Seminole Wars” in this area. As it grew, Fort Gathlin became a town Jernigan and was renamed Orlando in 1857 with a population of 85 people. Today the population has grown to 200,000 (1,5 million including satellite cities) but also hosts 50 million visitors every year making it the top tourist destination in the world.
Orlando, like Miami and New York, offers the cheapest flight connections to the USA from Europe, off-season still for little as only $500 return. For purposes of visiting acquaintances, shopping or just to taste some American dream, it is worth a visit even if only for some fun!
