Quite a surprise on a busy Leeds road, the ruins of a Cistertian Abbey next to a river - and to complete the surprise, the abbey ruins can be visited free! There's a modest charge for the excellent Abbey House Museum. Th websites given are for the Abbey and the museum respectively; the website for the museum is http://www.leeds.gov.uk/abbeyhouse/ I hesitated before putting the two together because the museum has an excellent childhood gallery and some superb old 'streets' and shops as well as the part about the history of the Abbey.
