El Mirador Basin Preserve - Guatemala, Petén
In the story of Mayan creation of the World, the hero twins, Xbalanque and Hanaphu swim to the Underworld to retrieve their father's head. Part of a frieze that encircles a large reservoir, the detail is amazing, especially when you consider that this piece is 2,200 years old! The discovery of this frieze was considered one of the Top 10 Archeological Finds of 2009.
