Tikal is a place of teeming wildlife, dense rain forest, and oh, by the way, a Mayan city erupts from the undergrowth. The first hint that you are approaching something extraordinary comes from the animal crossing signs on the road into the park. Anteater Crossing. Snake Crossing. Jaquar Crossing. Turkey Crossing? Many of the Pyramids, 13 at last count, are still unexcavated, which only adds to their mystery. Climb up the ladders of Temple IV and gaze over the tree canopy to see roof combs and mounds of the other Temples as well as Toucans and Monkeys. Hike the many paths to glance right and left at remains of palaces and accropolises that archeologists are still exploring. View Stellae that record the history of Lords in detailed hyroglyphics.
