The stones are not massive, but their size does stimulate imagination. They had been (apparently) brought from very far.

It used to be possible to wander among these stones but now there is a fence around the whole area and it is protected.

The stones are not massive?

jacko1 - Mar, 30 2009 11:03am
Petra, these stones range fro 4-25 tons and were thought to have been brought from up to 250 miles away, not bad when the site is over 5000 yrs old.

pesu - Mar, 30 2009 11:03am
You are right, Tony, I have seen (and touched) them many, many years ago - very impressive.

jacko1 - Mar, 30 2009 11:03am
You would not be allowed to touch them now, they are a World Heritage Site and regarded as sacred by the Druids, they are about an hour or so from my home. Hippies used to hold love ins in the 60's among these.

pesu - Mar, 30 2009 11:03am
Oh, I have been there in the 70's. ;-)

krisek - Mar, 30 2009 12:03pm
Petra/Tony - it is not possible to touch them during normal opening hours. Only on special tours, like the ones on 21 March and 22 Sept, when the sun passes thru specific parts of the stones... It is like the Druids gathering...

jacko1 - Mar, 30 2009 12:03pm
So were the hippies Petra :-).........

pesu - Mar, 30 2009 12:03pm
When I was there there were no fences, no guards, no druids, no hippies - only the majestic stones.

jacko1 - Mar, 30 2009 12:03pm
Also no vandals Petra, spraying graffitti!.

krisek - Mar, 30 2009 12:03pm
Tony, No vandals...? They must have arrived at some point, otherwise there would be no fences today, right?

jacko1 - Mar, 30 2009 12:03pm
Correct Krys, in the 60's and 70's vandals were punished, now they are rewarded!.

krisek - Mar, 30 2009 01:03pm
Tony, you put a smile on my face. Actually I laughed aloud!

jacko1 - Mar, 30 2009 01:03pm
I was being serious Krys, in the present day, if you don't pay your council tax you are imprisoned, if you kill someone you will go to prison for ten years or next friday, whichever is soonest, hehe.
