COLLEGIUM MAIUS dates back to the 15th century and is Poland's oldest university.
The arcaded courtyard with a marble fountain are worth a peek. The clock on one of the walls plays a tune at the hour while colourful figures dance round.
Museum Uniwerzytecki (University Museum) is by guided tour only. The tour starts inthe assembly hall and lecture rooms. Murals, once used for teaching grace the walls. Behind glass doors an impressive collection of old books. The professors' common room has a spiral staircase in the middle. In most rooms beautiful old globes are on display. The tour also includes the aula whose ceiling is decorated with rosettes and whose walls are lined with portraits of Polish Royalty and university professors.
The university's most famous student was the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, the latin translation of Mikołaj Kopernik
