Museum Mesdag is the private home of painter Hendrik Mesdag and his wife. He was the leading figure of The Hague School, a 19th century artistic movement, specialised in realistic landscape paintings. Mesdag was a collector of studies and sketches of French masters on which he modelled his own works. Soon he owned a largest collections of French masters. His private home became too small and he had a special museum built in his garden. Today his collection is on display in both the museum and private part of his house.
