Museum Mesdag is the private home of painter Hendrik Mesdag and his wife. He was the leading figure of The Hague School, a 19th century artistic movement, specialised in realistic landscape paintings. Mesdag was a collector of studies and sketches of French masters on which he modelled his own works.
Soon he owned a largest collections of French masters. His private home became too small and he had a special museum built in his garden. Today his collection is on display in both the museum and private part of his house. When you enter the museum it is as if you step back into the secon half of the 19th century.
