Budapest - Hungary, Budapest This legendary cafe dominates the Vorosmarty Square, built in 1870 by Hans Kugler, one of a dynasty of cavity-inducing confectioners. Emil Gerbeaud joined as a partner in 1883 and his ornate and delicious pastries and cakes became the toast of the town ( no pun intended ). The opulent deco style interior is early 20th C with lots of wood, marble, and bronze. Sadly, the place is now state-owned with a disinterested and unfriendly service staff and really pretty mediocre pastries. A better choice - Ruszwurm on Castle Hill near the St. Matthias church.
