Nurnberg - Germany, Bayern The castle dominates the Nurnberg skyline from a cliff at the NW edge of the old city, accessed by a long fairly steep walk from the town center. As an "Emperor City", the HRE had to reside here on a regular basis and did until 1571.
Konrad III built the first castle in the early 12th C, enlarged 50 years later by Friedrich Barbarossa who added the famed double level chapel. The final form was achieved in the late 15th C with the construction of the Round Tower, Knight's Hall, and the Royal Stables ( now a popular hostel ). It was rebuilt to original plans after heavy WWII bombardment. Tours are available only in German.
