Istanbul - Turkey, Istanbul Tulips were first imported to Istanbul in the 14th C, pictured in artwork, and from here spread to western Europe and the Netherland\'s tulipmania. The tulip period peaked here in the 18th C with Sultan Ahmet III and his fascinating and ultimately doomed military leader, Mustafa Pasa, who grew forty different breeds. Today, it is said that there is one tulip in Istanbul for every twelve residents, over a million.
This stylized tulip between the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque features the pointed, dagger shaped petals typical of Turkish tulips.
