Perhaps the most important room in all of Berlin's museums, the altar was built between 180-160 BC to commemorate the military victories of Eumenes II. It was taken to Germany by 19th C archaeologists and rebuilt over 20 years. Nazi chief architect Albert Speer used it as the model for the Zeppelintribune in Nuremberg. After WWII the altar was taken to Leningrad's Hermitage but returned to Berlin inn 1958 by order of Nikita Krushchev.
The most striking feature is the high relief frieze in multiple sections. Here, the segment devoted to Nyx, the goddess of darkness and death, the forerunner of Prosperina. The massive nature of the Altar can be appreciated by the massive columns above the frieze. Too big to be captured even in part by a photograph.
