Dresden - Germany, Sachsen The centerpiece of Dresden's Alstadt was commissioned by August the Strong to compete with Louis XIV's Versailles but was never intended as a residence. The final appearance of a closed rectangle with lawns, wide pathways, and fountains is attributed to Semper who closed off the side facing the Elbe after finishing the opera house. Open to the public from the beginning, it was used for court functions and celebrations and today houses several remarkable museums in its classic Baroque structure as seen at the entrance from Theatreplatz depicted here. The entire edifice was reconstructed after WWII bombing.
