I had a bad impression when I first decided to go to Guatemala. The entire country, however, was a huge suprise. Antigua is in a great location to get out of the VERY dangerous Guatemala City. It is about a 45 minute chicken bus ride away and has wonderful charm. A relatively clean city with a lot of culture, the people are friendly, safe, nice pubs/bars and as in throughout the country, very cheap. Interested in language courses? This is an ideal spot. Around 400--450 USD for one month, one on one teaching including room and board. FOR SOME REASON this picture is coming up as another when I upload it...click on the picture to see the city streets of Antigua.

Favourite spots: |
Great area to escape the city and hike in a nearby volcano...go with a guide for there ARE robbers everywhere so I was told by many (I avoided trouble!). 3 bour bus ride to Lake Atitlan which is beautiful and peaceful, but as far as in the city, relax and spend the day around the city square. Remember, throughout Guatemala, SLOW DOWN!, just let things ride and be tranquillo.

What's really great: |
The rice milk that is sold on the street corners. Was told this woman has been there for years...she has the best rice milk in town and is on the edge of the city square by the internet cafes. Hmmmmmm.....

Accommodations: |
Very inexpensive and clean, depending on where you go. Can't think of any names, but they are everywhere.

Hangouts: |
Monkey cafe! Fun little place with 2 for 1's from 6-8 or 8-10 depending on the day.

I was wondering about the Coffee there, and a recent interest in Coffee Tourism. It seems that crime is a very serious concern in Guatemala. |
