In one end a bus station, in the other end a gas station - in between a long street, Avenida Central, with plenty of farmacies and shoestores. Some few neighbouring streets and a lot of unpaved and unnamed ones, pretty nice central park.

Parque central is the natural gathering point - you´re likely to get to know all the shoeshiners in town. And the Belgian run cafe La Casita is a nice half an hour walk towards Managua, with pan integral, real cheese, hot chocolate and other goodies.

My Spanish school. Not that it`s particularly good in comparison with many of the ones in Guatemala, but if you ever decide to study at CENAC (at the panamericana, enfrente calles 5 y 6, costs $110 a week with homestay) ask to study with Marlene Castillo, she´s awesome.

In the city...ehm, none really. Miraflor natural reserve is possible to do in a daytrip, and there´s a cute church facing parque central.

Stayed with friends and hostfamilies most of the time, so only got to try out Hotel Mariella, right next to the bus station - pretty comfy double with bath ran $C 110, cheaper w/o bath. Are plenty of cheap hostels along Avenida Central and neighbouring street as you walk towards the centre - Hospedaje Sacuanjoche has been recommended to me.

| Nightlife: |
|
Think there`s a disco right next to the Texaco station, which is a pretty long walk from the centre.

Las Brasas, right off parque central is tacky but amusing, also a hangout for the few expats there are in town. Most restaurants serve beer.

None stood out. A pretty decent pizza place in calle 6, originally named Hot Pizza... Esteli along with most of Nicaragua is no food destination.
|
|
| Other recommendations: |
A few Spanish schools, perfect environment for practicing a lot of Spanish; CENAC as mentioned; Escuela Horizonte ($150), Gueguense ($100 - located across the panamericana highway) and a couple of others.
Two bus stations, one for Managua, Leon etc. at the west end of avenida central; one for north/Honduran border across the panamericana.
