Lately, competition has driven down the prices on air tickets in Norway considerably. One of the destinations you can reach from my home town, Oslo, without emptying your pocket, is Prestwick outside Glasgow in Scotland.

Generally speaking, there are two good reasons for visiting Glasgow. Firstly, it is a shoppers paradise. The city is GB's second largest shopping city after London, and cheaper. Secondly, Glasgow has a lot of museums for those prefering culture. Besides that, you will find a variety of good restaurants and charming pubs.

Live Music at Clutha Vaults
 |
 |
Glasgow has one of the best book shops I have ever been to. It is called Borders and is situated right in the middle of the city. It is one of these places where you could easily spend half a day between the shelves. They also sell CDs DVDs and have a nice cafe. One other place I would recommend, is a pub called Clutha Vaults (see guide). It has a genuine Scottish atmosphere and great live music, eg R&B.

What's really great: |
What I really liked about Glasgow, was the friendly people. The staff in restaurants and shops where very nice and service minded, and it was easy to get in contact with the locals in pubs (even if the scottish accent can be quite hard to understand sometimes).

Sights: |
Gallery of Modern Art at Royal Exchange Square was interesting. I can also recommend People's Palace and Winter Gardens, at Glasgow green, where you can explore the history of the people of the city. Both places are centrally located and easy to access if you are on a short visit and want to add some cultural touch to the shopping.

Accommodations: |
We stayed in a hotel called Tulip inn at Ballater Street. It was OK, nothing more, nothing less. The neigbourhood wasn't that nice, and I don't think it was worth the price. Next time I think I will try to find a place on the other side of River Clyde, closer to Sauchiehall Street, where most of the restaurants are located.

Clutha Vaults at Bridgegate! Highly recommended!

Restaurants: |
Corinthian at 191 Ingram street had excellent food. However, the portions were small, and the prices at the higher side. Di Maggio's at Royal Exchange Square was really good, the pasta and pizza were exactly how you would expect from an Italian restaurant. The Social, also at Royal Exchange Square was a nice place to have a light lunch. Kama Sutra Restaurant at 331 Sauchiehall street had excellent Indian food at reasonable prices and very good service. Highly recommended!

Good report and photos about Glasgow, I've never been there, but I think it's more then shopping and pubs, I guess the atmosphere will be great too, maybe one day I will find that out by myself. |
