I went to London for the first time, alone and had a wonderful adventure. I stayed away from many of the typical tourist areas, and took a wonderful book and walking guide with me. The Spiritual Traveler and An Esoteric Walk in London were my companions.

Stayed at a very reasonable (about 100US dollars per WEEK) boarding house in the Bloomsbury area- walking distance to trendy restaurants and the theatre district. Took two day trips to the countryside of England, but definitely enjoyed my days in this massive city.

Old contrasting new on the River Thames

Walking along the river Thames. Some great architecture, statues and the weather in September was wonderful and sunny.

What's really great: |
The old theatres are attractions in and of themselves. I saw Blood Brothers among others and enjoyed the shows and found the British audiences very polite. Also caught Stones in his Pockets at the New Ambassadors Theatre.

Was there for UK Vegan Week in London which hosted local shops, chefs, books, and restuarants specializing in veg foods. Very nice gathering outdoors. Taking the esoteric walk I found on this link http://www.paganlink.org/uk-info/bookwal-k.html and it was wonderful! I enjoyed the old book shoppes and interesting tips of things to look for in the area I stayed. Gower Street, which is a continuation of Bloomsbury Street has a few secondhand bookshops including Unsworth, Rice and Coe which is just truly London. The book, The Spiritual Traveler helped me notice some of the religious and spiritual elements in the architecture and statues that I may not have noticed. I was facinated with the details of even the street lamps with the "Green God" faces, and faces of goddesses. Even on the River, the Needle from Egypt provided a wonderful example of the variety of cultures in this town.

Accommodations: |
Acorn Management Group can set you up with just about any of their properties ranging from dorm style to family sized flat. I had a great experience with them.
|
|
Restaurants: |
Plant on Poland Street - winner of the LondonEats.com award, and the best vegan chocolate cake..yum. Fifteen- ok it gets hype, and the wait is long, but dang the food is worth it! Yum Yum Thai Restaurant on the West side. The name says it. Crowded, but worth going a bit early and people watching. The Coyote Café, in Chiswick Park was a great British version of Tex-Mex- us gringos got a real kick out of the interpretations!
|
|
Other recommendations: |
I did not enjoy Westminister Abbey- too crowded and the musty smell was overwhelming for me. I did enjoy the surrounding area, statues and gargoyles in the area, look up and around, they are everywhere.
