Hangzhou travelogue picture
Hangzhou, more than 6 milion chinese people in one city. That old city is known because of his great lake but more because of the wonders that great old explorers as Marco Polo said about it. This city and his lake is one of the highlights of China. (But also one of the most expensive ones.)

Favourite spots:
Hangzhou travelogue picture
Obviously the West Lake, Xi Hu, is my favourite spot and really there is not so much to see in Hangzhou. You can visit the islands in the middle of the lake and take a day just sailing in. So pleasant if the sun is shinning. The Yue Fei Mu is a mausoleum-temple at the north side of the lake and is also interesting also as the Liuhe Ta, Six harmonies Pagoda. Ops! and the Lingyin Si, the temple at the west side of the city but so far from the budget hotels area.

What's really great:
I found this city not enough special. Nothing really great coming from other interesting areas of China but anyway the West lake and the islands are beautiful. The night market (Zhonghe Lu) is also nice and you can find there some old things, antiques, textils, etc...

Sights:
Xi Hu Lake and the islands.
You can take a ferry in front of the cheap hotels area. It costs 36 Yuen Renmimbi and includes three rides.
1.- From the coast to the central island.
2.-From the central island to the Three pools mirroring the moon island (Really beautiful).
3.- From the island to: A.the coast at the other side of the lake. B.The coast at the same place whare you began. C. Or to the temples area at the north area coast of the lake.

Accommodations:
Believe me. ;)
I walk all around the lake area and the cheapest i found was 100 Yuen Renmimbi.
Yeah! and bargaining hard. Hangzhou is really expensive and you can find pseudo-cheap-budget accomodations in dormitories by 120 Yuen.
The best is ask in some hotels near the East side of the lake.
I was at Xi Hu Fandian. Good hotel, great location, clean, etc... it´s ok.
Renhe Lu, 80
At the same street there are another hotel at the same price (Bargaining) and the next street going south (Youdian Lu) have also two more hotels with similar prices.
Don´t walk carrying your backpack further looking for something chaper ... well... i think that there are nothing cheaper near the lake.

Nightlife:
There are some clubs and pubs at Nashan Lu, going south from the hotels area along the lake. Just a little walk.
There are three or four interesting places but, sorry, i can´t remmember the names. Not expensive.

Restaurants:
Going out of the lake area, inside the city from the hotels area you can find some street restaurants that are enough good and so cheap. (From 6 to 20 Yuen)
Usually you will find chinesse girls at the door waiting for people to catch and bring inside their restaurants so will be not so difficoult to find it, just walk around. Take care with your bags at this kind of restaurants.

Other recommendations:
From the Bus station, west one specially, but for all of them, don´t take the rippers taxis because they will try to charge you between 200 and 300 Yuen for a ride to the city center ... well why not? But out of the bus station there are urban buses that do the same ride for 12 Yuen.

Hi Daniel
Thank you for your Report on Hangzhou, I miss the part about the stone carvings next to the old monastery. Where there are Buddhas and other figures carved into the solid rock of the cliff there, I liked it quite a lot but it was only a day trip from shanghai.
