Lausanne is a twenty-five minute ride from Geneva. Very easy to get there and the trip is just a bit to short as the scenary is stunning. It is situated on Lake Geneva and has numerous towns surrounding the lake which are easy to access by boat or vehicle.

Favourite spots: |
I was very suprised by the International Olympic Museum. I feel it is a must see if you are in Lausanne. The museum has interactive activities for children and adults that can keep you occupied for hours. More so , it gives a solid historical foundation of the Olympics and expresses its effectiveness in bringing the world together under the vise of games. The boardwalk along the lake is very pleasant. Many ice cream shops, resturants, and pubs line the lake. In winter or summer, it is a perfect time to visit. Winter in particular gives the town a Christmas feel all winter long. Doesn't get too cold in town, but up on the mountain, it can bite a little...dress warm.

What's really great: |
Lausanne is the gateway, if you will, to the true village feel that one expects from Switzerland. It is not quite a Julie Andrews movie, but close. The ski mountains (two that I know of) face the lake which provides for a great atmosphere. Many great hiking trails all over the place and the parks in Lausanne proper, are very nice to relax with an alpine (Peppermint Schnaps and hot chocolate...ahhhh).

Accommodations: |
Switzerland as a whole does not provide for the best prices for backpackers. Still, we stayed a decent three star hotel for the equivilant of 85 Euros (3 beds but roomy). Any of the hotels on the upper hill are approximately the same price. From the train station, either ask at the information booth (very friendly) or simply walk up the hill and you will find many.

Hangouts: |
Many, many pubs...might want to check it out before you go into some of them. I cannot say I fully understand the culture here, so this speaks nothing bad about Lausanne necessarily, but I am pretty sure one place we went in was probably a skinhead bar (went in and ordered before noticing!). To my darker skinned friends, you might want to double check first!

Restaurants: |
Fondou places everywhere, lots of pizza resturants. Many places do a set meal. Prices range from minimum 10 euros and up to whatever you want to pay.
