Ollantaytambo is a small town in the Urubamba river valley north of Cusco. The town sits below some impressive ruins and tall mountains rise all around it. Many of the streets are are made of cobblestones with water running in gullies alongside.

Favourite spots: |
Atop the ruins with a beautiful view over the valley, fields of corn(maize), the town, and terraced and unterraced mountainsides. I nice place to relax and soak in the view.

What's really great: |
Horseback riding was my great adventure here. A group of travellers rented horses for the day and went up and then down mountain trails. Once the horse jumped over a large boulder leaving me firmed astride the saddle behind. On the top of the mountain we met two children shepherds and their sheep. They stared dumbstruck at the Australia in the group who had blonde hair and blue eyes.

Sights: |
Machu Picchu is nearby. I used Ollantaytambo as a base town to see the famous Incan Ruins. The ruins themselves are not so impressive, but the setting and the area is FANTASTIC! I really recommend at Macchu Picchu the climb up nearby Huayna Picchu which is only a short hike with incredible views.

Accommodations: |
The hostel I stayed at was also the mayor's house. It was a pleasant place built around a courtyard/parking lot. Sorry, I do not remember the name.
