Petra - hints & tips

  12 votes

There is no point attempting to describe all the wonders of Petra - the many guidebooks will fully oblige. But some hints & tips might be useful. The usual half-day stops by coach tours are useless if you really want to enjoy the area. We were based in Eilat, and the 'full-day' Petra trip, just allowed you to get half-way down the Petra valley to the Amphitheatre, and then back you came! Terrible! We found it very easy to arrange going out on one day trip coach, and picking up the next day's coach for the return, at no extra cost. The tour people fixed us a splendid hotel at very low cost for the night. So we 'did' the tourist trip and then had a delightful evening in the nearby village, Wadi Musa, eating well, talking with Jordanians. Then best of all, we were up at 6 a.m. the next morning and entered Petra all by ourselves! To have the whole valley to yourself, not with hordes of tourists, is unforgettable!

Favourite spots:
Since you now have a further full day in Petra, fix a donkey 'lift' up into the mountains to see 'The Monastery'. A great site - and an unforgettable donkey ride! (Don't go if you're nervous of precipices!).

What's really great:
Just ..... Petra! History, sihgts, geography, archeaology all rolled into one.

Sights:
Petra!

Accommodations:
Several very good hotels in Wadi Musa for the night's stop-over.

Nightlife:
Not really applicable

Hangouts:
Not really applicable.

Restaurants:
Several fine small places in Wadi Musa

Other recommendations:
Isn't Petra enough!
Try to include the Wadi Rum (great desert/gorge scenery) between Petra & Aqaba.
