Prague was the most tourist filled destination I have been to in years, or ever. But don't let that deter you from visiting this historic city. It is still affordable compared to the main attractions of Europe, but you have to hunt for the deals!

A friend and I took a weekend trip to Prague in February. It was cold, but this did not stop us from walking around the city for 2.5 days. If anything, it movated us to find cozy cafes to enjoy a hot cup of cocao!

Favourite spots: |
I was not in Prague for long enough to gain an attraction for any favourite spots. However, I can tell you what parts of Prague I enjoyed the most! My tour strategy was to keep my map in my pocket and just walk and walk and walk. I would not necessarily follow the throngs of tourists but often duck into a courtyard and admire the quiet, peaceful area in the middle of this busy city. Do not be afraid to wonder off the beaten path (aka the Royal Mile) and explore all the nooks and crannies of the city by yourself.

|
What's really great: |
I enjoyed walking along the river and watching all the tourists on Charles Bridge. I found that I had a better view of the bridge when I was along the shore and not caught in the middle of the tourist crowd.

|
Sights: |
We only had time to see all the obvious, tourist crowded sights.
- Charles Bridge - if you can go early in the morning you will beat the crowd of tourists.
- Prague Castle - The new part of the castle is not impressive, but go see the old side...
- the Old Town - like I mentioned before, walk aimlessly and get lost. You will discover parts of the old town that you never would had you followed a map!
- Jewish Quarter
- Take a Free Prague city tour (you can tip the tour guide at the end of the tour). It was a great introduction to the city, the history and all the sights. Then you can explore in more detail on your own. The tour meets in the Old Town Square on the corner of Parizska Street at 10:30am every morning.

Accommodations: |
We stayed at Hostel Tyn. It is located right in the heart of the old city, in a very quiet location. When we arrived we were offered an upgrade to a private room, instead of dorm-style, for the same price. The room, bathroom and shower facilities were all kept very clean. There was a small kitchen which we did not use, free internet facilities which we did use and a TV room. The hostel doors were kept locked but there was always a hostel employee around the open the door for you. I highly recommend this hostel!

|
Nightlife: |
You would not notice many of the Pubs in Prague during the day because they are underground. At night, do not be afraid to wander down a steep staircase into the darkness...you will probably find a cozy pub to enjoy some cheap Czech brew!
|
|
Restaurants: |
We spent our breakfasts a Bohemian Bagel which is 3 left turns from Hostel Tyn.
Due to my unfamiliarity with the Czech language I cannot remember any of the restaurants we went to. I n only suggest to ask the locals, get a taxi and tell him to drive you to his favourite restaurant! This way you will find the cheaper, local hangouts.
|
|
Other recommendations: |
For all those females out there - don't forget to czech out some of the shops! Be careful about the jewelry though, it is way overpriced in the Old Town and it is mainly there for the tourists. If you feel the urge to buy jewelry, first wander out of the old town, then dont be afraid to bargain! No matter how classy the place looks ;)
