Uppsala is a picturesque Swedish town with about 180,000 people including the student population. It has the feel of a small town, but the amenities of a city and it is located about 40min by train from Stockholm.
|
There are two universities located in Uppsala, the bigger being Uppsala Universitet which has a population of about 40,000 students, teachers, administrators and staff. The University, however, is not on one centralized campus, it is spread all over town making it a University town. Uppsala University is the oldest university in the Nordic countries, being established in 1477.

People sitting along the Fyris relaxing
 |
 |
As soon as the warmer weather and sun comes (around 10 degrees celsius) the Swedes start suntanning outside. Everyone flocks to the nearest water which, as this time of year (mid April) is the Fyris River that runs through the town. There are docks along the rivers edge so people can sit and enjoy the sun, but be careful, at this tme of year the river is very high and rapidly flowing so dont fall in! Another place that I enjoy, which most European towns have, is the pedestrian only shopping street. Even if you are not shopping, it is a great place to sit on a bench and people watch, or just walk slowly while window shopping. There are soe great cafes at one end of this street that are not too expensive.

What's really great: |
I especially liked the welcoming feeling of the town and its inhabitants. All the Swedish people I met were very helpful and kind. Uppsala is also a very international town due to its University nature. There are many many exchange students from all over the world who are very willing to network and make new friends.

Sights: |
Universitetshuset is the University Main Building where guest speakers give lectures and concerts are held. It is verry beautiful and unique for a university building. I recommend taking a walk around inside. Domkyrkan is Uppsala's Cathedral and is one of the biggest in Sweden. It towers over the city and is the tallest, if not the second tallest building to the castle which is located on a hill. The exhibits in the cathedral are constantly changing throughout the year to reflect the current holiday (easter, christmas). Gamla Uppsala is the site of a Viking burial ground. There is also a museum that tells the history of the area. Nice walk on a spring day. Carilina Rediviva is the Main University library. It unique inside with the winding staircases that go up a wall of books. Slottet is the Uppsala Castle which houses the Uppsala Art Museum. There is also a botanical garden behind the castle during the summer. Stora Torget is the Center of town - shopping, what more can I say!

Accommodations: |
I lived in Uppsala for 1 year as a student in student housing. If you are a student looking to come to Uppsala, try and get housing in Flogsta. Here you get your own bathroom and large room, and you share a kitchen (with 2 of everything) with 11 other people. Flogsta is about a 15min bike ride from the city center, but it is well worth it as most students live here and there is always something going on (party) that you can join.

A night at Stockholms Nation club
 |
 |
Since Sweden is expensive, students tend to stick to partying and drinking at the student nations, or at house parties. The student nations offer discounts on drinks and entrance fees to those who hold a valid Uppsala student ID. If you do not have this, you can pick up a temporary one for 50kr weekdays from 5-7pm at the Uppsala Studentkår.

Hangouts: |
Find a cafe and go for a Fika! My favourite is Cafe Capuccino because it is affordable. Fika is like an extended coffee break where you site, drink coffe/tea/hot chocolate, eat a dessert, and talk. If done properly, you will be there for a couple of hours!

|
Restaurants: |
Restaurants are too expensive for students budget, therefore I never go!
