San Jose is a large city with lots of traffic and bad air. It's a good place to rent a car and get out to the rest of the country. The herpetarium in downtown San Jose is worth seeing. The water is good to drink throughout the country. People are very friendly.

Favourite spots: |
Volcan Arenal - erupts about every 40 minutes. Spectacular at night. My favorite spot in Costa Rica is Puerto Viejo on the east coast. It's a small town with no paved roads, clean small hotels, good surf and great restaurants. I stayed at a hotel called Casa Blanca for about US$20 a night. Don't miss Monteverde. Canopy tours there are not cheap, but they are worth every penny.

What's really great: |
Puerto Viejo is very laid back. It has a Caribbean air to it. The surf is best at Punto Uvo. There's a point break there that makes for a spectacular ride.
