Sausalito, the tiny seaside jewel on the cost of the bay was established in 1838 by William Richardson and at that far away time the city had a slightly different name: Rancho Del Sausalito- (Ranch of the Little Willow Grove).
|
William Richardson had received huge land grants from the government and right away took the land into his control .The Indian tribe called Uimen had lived at the same area for centuries but was driven away from their native land as soon as Europeans had settled there. So at that very time Richardson does not want to have establish a city at all,but only a large cow rancho right on the shores of San Francisco Bay. Sausalito started to grow at the time of Gold Rush ,when Charles Botts a lawyer from Virginia had bought the entire land from Richardsons unsuccessful venture, and eventually planned the city. The year was 1860- the pick time for Gold Rush. Picturesque and with very mild climate ,with a lush green hill slowly descending to the shores of protected Richardson Bay, has attracted well to do residents and they had settled on a beautiful hill overlooking San Francisco skyline ,Alcatraz Island ,Angel Island as well as Eat Bay. Magnificent estates and near by shops started to grow there not by the day ,but by the hours and the city started rapidly to grow. At the present time Sausalito is very quaint town with beautiful mansions ,restaurants ,boutique shops and some of them are located right on the water front-The Bridgeway Boulevard. The view from the waterfront Bridgeway Boulevard also known as Water street is spectacular! Many compare this city with a Mediterranean village. What is very interesting that all small shops are located mainly in two story historical buildings and located on the ground floor ,while the living quarters are located above .All the buildings on the main street are representing different stiles, and is very hard to find similar constructions .They are very attractive and relate to one another in harmonious way. All the stores are mainly tourist oriented ,and they all had replaced old family oriented businesses .In the middle of the commercial district a small and charming park is located with a fountain ,that was built in 1915.

Favourite spots: |
The first impression of the city is the water front street ,that runs along the water edge with a awesome view over the bay and San Francisco .The most striking part of the street starts almost at the very point when you enter the city form highway 101. The narrow road takes you down ,snaking through the hills and ones you finally descend ,in front your eyes you find the breathtaking panoramic view of the bay with numerous yachts calmly gliding the blue waters of the Richardson Bay .The view over the bay ,near by islands and San Francisco is so striking ,that is no wonder why this city attracts tourists from all parts of the world .Strolling along the bay, visiting interesting shops and enjoying always the fresh air that this city always has to offer and.... the million dollar view

What's really great: |
The city has Mediterranean flavor ,fills like without leaving the States, I’m visiting some Southern Mediterranean village-the Italy around the corner, even the name sounds so Italian and the city definitely has this unique appeal. Relaxing meal in one,or few water front restaurants with of course window seating or seating right on the waterfront patio and even on the rainy day makes it very magical.Stoping at some very interesting art shops ,that sell from very expansive crystal and paintings to awesome statues with artfully designed themes.Sausalito is well known for being an art Mecca of Northern California. All talented artists from around the world display their work in Sausalito art galleries.
