We were lucky enough to meet up with Juan and Lucy Vega who invited up to stay with them at their "el rancho" out from Sontecomapan opposite La Barra. The only way to get to the ranch was by lancha or boat. First of all they picked us up and we picked up some supplies, the ubiquitous frijoles (refried beans) and tequila of course and then headed out of town in their pickup truck driving through the picturesque countryside to Sontecomapan. There is still some pristine jungle here; this is the spot where they filmed the Medicine Man with Sean Connery.

Favourite spots: |
When we arrived by lancha the ranch was a hive of frenetic activity. We were warned this was a new enterprise and that we were the test guinea pigs, fine by us.When we there there was a main kitchen/eating area the main bungalow and 4 new cabanas being constructed. Accommodations were bunk beds and facilities limited. Make sure you bring mosquito repellant and take malaria tablets!

What's really great: |
We really enjoyed whole experience. Juan and Lucy were perfect hosts. Mornings spent swimming, afternoons lazing in the hammocks, excursions over to La Barra, hikes up the nearest peak, canoing through the mangroves, the experience was otherworldly. Juan with his fluent english very interested in knowing about your homeland and Lucy always correcting and encouraging your spanish.

Accommodations: |
Accommodations when were there were very limited, bunk beds and cold showers but it is so humid this is not a problem. Because our hosts were so warm and friendly the limited comfort was not even noticable.

Restaurants: |
Lucy is a great cook. One of the things that I liked best if they needed to supplement supplies they would hail a passing fisherperson and on the home run they would pull up at the jetty and you took your pick...fresh crabs, fresh fish, all cooked a la Lucy style with plenty of chilli. Unforgettable.

Other recommendations: |
For more information if you are heading that way I would be more than happy to forward their address to you. We paid them a nominal amount to cover our food etc but I am sure as the enterprise gets off the ground they will set more permanent rate structure that I am sure will still be very reasonable.
It really was one of my more memorable travelling experiences.
