Israel is much much more than you could imagine! I have been to Israel twice. I found an incredibly diverse and vibrant culture, far removed from the images portrayed on BBC and CNN.

Tel Aviv is a thriving metropolis, packed with trendy nightclubs, bars and resturants. The amount of different food available until the wee hours of the morning is nothing short of amazing, far beyond just a humble falafal. The young people who are not serving compulsary military service go out every night of the week to have fun and relax. People are free to express themselves and there are many outlets here to do just that. The shopping is fantastic, with current european fashion, as well as many local designers. As well as embracing modern living, there is still a wealth of historical charm and sights in yafo, where it feels the same as it did a hundred years ago. The issue of safety is usually first on peoples minds, and though the threat is there, I felt much safer than in Bangkok or Mumbai, mostly because everybody is aware and the locals are looking out for each other and especially for tourists.

3 day music festival on the beach!!
|
|
The beach. At the beach there is many cafes and clubs right on the sand, and every place is playing popular music. It really is great fun to sit on the beach and drink smoothies, eat fruit and hear music. Everybody is so friendly and it's easy to meet people, and everybody knows somebodys friend. The sea temperature is perfect, and if you are there between may and october, the sun is always shining and hot. Sheinkin street is the coolest place to be seen, with more than enough coffee shops, juice bars, thumping music stores and the most individual fashions around.

What's really great: |
The food, the food and the food. Every place I ate a meal, be it classy resturant or street stand takeaway, the food was something special. People really take care to serve high quality food, because in Israel, if the food isn't the best it can be, nobody will eat it, so there is a lot of competiton to be the best.

Accommodations: |
For real high quality hotel, at a great price for the current exchange rate , the Dan Panarama is excellent, with full buffet breakfast, which means so much food you could not need to eat again until dinner!! Back packing there are many good and cheap places, all very reasonable prices, expect to pay about $15 to $20 a night basic.

Julia, I would love to go to Israel, but I must admit I am a little weary. But your report definitely made me aware that life was still good and people are enjoying themselves. It was nice reading your report. |
