Our holidays by car with our dog in north eastern Spain, on the delta and up the river. On the beaches, up the mountains and in the towns And villages.
|
The Ebro is the largest river in Spain & at its mouth on the eastern coast is one of the biggest deltas in Europe. Many people fish While others watch birds on the delta. The scenery changes from mountains at the sourse of the river& onwards past Tortosa & the absolutely flat on the delta, with its enormouse skies. In the mountains, olives are grown along with stone fruits, there are orange groves a bit lower downtowards the coast & paella rice is a big crop on the delta. The largest towns are Tortosa, an old cathedral & university city near the mountains. Deltebre, on the delta, is made up from 2 old villages Jesus & Maria and Cava, where the market is held every Thursday.

Favourite spots: |
I love the deltas beaches with their golden sands & sometimes lively sea. We take walks with our dog, yes she comes too !on the causeways near the village of Poblenou.A good place for a reasonably priced lunch. Its fun to take one of the three car ferries across the river at Deltebre. But it doesnt matter where one is on the delta to appreciate those great big skies.

The food is very good, lots of fish ,shell fish & locally grown rice of course. My favorite is a dih called black rice, made from cuttle fish & rice which is blackened with the ink sacs from the cuttle fish. The delta ducks are super & rather bigger than ours in the UK, very tasty!

Planting rice the old way!

 |
At Sant Carles, a seaside resort on the southern end of the Delta is a great tapas bar on a corner right opposite the sea .

|
Restaurants: |
The Delta Hotel On the delta has a good restaurant. There are 2 good restaurants & quite cheap in one of the few side streets in Poblenou. We have spent time having cheap workers meals served Mondays to Fridays at lunchtime. They are served almost everywhere at lunch only & cost 8-12 euros , this includes wine or beer & water.

Other recommendations: |
Ive not been yet but intend to Tarragona is not too far away. It you have time go to Sitges & Barcelona 2 hours by road or train.

Great start - I read it second and therefore I see you've taken advantage of advice from Rudi, Eire and Marianne in your next.. Particularly good to see something on a part of Spain mainly neglected here. Thanks for that. |

Nice pictures especially the one of rice planting. Maybe you could add some more detail especially in the 'sights' section as ' Just generally lovely' so very general. I'd like to know what was so lovely. |

Pat, great to see you jump in so quickly! This is a nice start! A little more detail would be great, but your pictures are first rate! Nicely done! |
