I've visited Finland a lot and toured around mainly because I happen to have relatives there as well as it is in the case of Sweden. First time was in the 1980's and the latest time in 2011. |

Entering Vaasa by car from Tampere.

Vaasa is a seaside city on Finnish west coast quite a bit north from Turku, which might be easier to find from the maps (if anyone uses them map books and such anymore? I do anyway). It's very nice during summer for the general park like atmosphere and compact downtown. There are a lot of things to do for people who like nature, boating, fishing, photography and so on. For a city lover it might not be the ideal place though since it's only got some 60 000 inhabitants so you might guess what's it like. I've also visited numerous North Finnish cities and towns including Tornio (right next to Swedish border with one golf track in two countries), Oulu (nice summer city on the seaside, freezing during winter), Ylivieska (gateway to Kalajoki town beach resort for people who like to drink and listen to so-so music during midsummer festival or just have a swim on probably the largest sand beach in Finland) and a lot more you can find in my Traveler Willem blog.

A small part of the jogging track, late autumn evening.

The jogging track around the city... seriously it goes around the city pretty much all the way, including sceneries of the sea, forest, downtown and more. The docks area (of small, mainly private, boats). Downtown area for strolling and looking at people do their thing.

What's really great: |
The nature and the city being park like. The photography and the physical exercise opportunities are quite good and there are a few small sand beaches there too for the sun worshippers.

Sights: |
Downtowns, beaches where available.

Accommodations: |
Living with relatives is free and simple. Omena hotel's are cheap but there's no staff there. Mainly Finnish hotels are expensive (100 euro or more per night unless discount in 3* places) and the service doesn't really reach beyond giving you the key. Bath house hotels are a bit different of course. Ask locals for info on motels or hostels.

|
Restaurants: |
In Vaasa, the smaller Chinese restaurant and Rax. In general, if you can find Rax, it's a decent all-you-can-eat deal. Chinese restaurants are mostly decent, but the good one's are rare.
