Zakopane is a small tourist town at an entrance to the Tatra Mountains National Park. The town is popular for skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer. It has an attractive alpine appearance and many restuarants and tourist shops.

Favourite spots: |
Hiking in the mountains. I was there in mid October, and the vistas with the fall colors were beautiful. I stayed a week and the last few days it snowed in the mountains the appearance of the mountains changed becoming lovely in a different way.

What's really great: |
I took a day tour to Dunejic Gorge which included a raft trip and visiting a castle on a lake. The rafting was on fast water, but not whitewater. The river cut through a pretty gorge and I saw a few incredibly red rainbow trout in a river.

Sights: |
The alpine architecture was a real treat. There are many beautiful churches and houses around town. There is a great cable car ride to the top of a mountain in the national park on the border with Slovakia. The day I took the ride, it was snowing on the top of the mountain with very low visability. The slow ascent into the clouds was still worth it though. North of town, there is a funucular railway which goes up a large hill or small mountain where there is a amusement park area.

Accommodations: |
I stayed in two places. The PTTK dormitory which I hated, although it was a large attractive alpine building, because I went from having a small cold to a terrible cold there. A group of Germans there at the time insisted the windows be open at all times. So at night, the place was literally freezing! I moved into a private home after that to comfortably recover. It was in a nice house a short walk from the center of town. Finding a private room to stay at was easy because around the bus and train stations babushkas, old ladies in bland layered clothing, hang out and will find you a place to stay depending on how much your willing to pay. The dorm was $5 a night, and the private room $10.

Restaurants: |
There are many restuarants serving traditional Polish and German cuisine. The most popular restuarant in town though seems to have been McDonalds. I can hear the groans across the internet.
