Hi GLOBO's
Thank you all for joining in this discussion!
I did write the different views and rating schemes on a single paper and tried to find a general guide line so far.
That's what I came up with:
* Poor quality, poor subject matter, uninteresting. Are you sure?
** Somewhat good, somewhat boring, Below average
*** Nice subject, but no outstanding attributes to show a difference. Good shot (I like this)
**** High quality. Interesting. good composition, lighting, shadows, colourful
***** Excellent shot (I could stare at this all day) great first impression, tells a story
Or much simpler (and it's just what misty suggested :-) )
* Poor shot
** somewhat good
*** good
**** great
***** excellent
I also like Rudis way of adding or subtracting a star for travel interest in the picture. Like that an absolutely perfect shot would never get 5 stars when it's not travel related (Flower, Pet, ...) He also does the same for a special place. (The more remote the more stars the more common the less...)
And also in the same way subtract stars for the member in the picture problem (me in front of ...., me and my friends...)
What is you opinion about all this?

Ok then if I understand you correctly, the proposed rating is:
* better delete this picture
** ok , SOMEWHAT good and if it is from Annapurna or Nova Zemlaya add one star - If too personal deduct one star
*** GOOD and if from exotic location add one star. If too personal deduct one star
**** GREAT and if from exotic location add one star If too personal deduct one star
***** Excellent and if from exotic location add one star. If too personal deduct one star
Perhaps you will be not angry if I suggest a very significant combination such as the sun picking out Assisi under the rainbow might also qualify for that bonus star.

Hi Hugh
Well I suppose thats the general approach here.
You can even add or deduct two or more stars (well you cant go higher than 5 stars ;-) hehehe ) ... it's up to you, but in general one would be enough I suppose ;-)
I for myself am very strict with the fifth star. I really like to give 5 Stars only to pictures that really are technically great or really attract me very much, like Misty says: I could stare at it all day! (what a brilliant definition)
As for this picture you mentioned:
http://www.globosapiens.net/tmorgalis/picture-assisi---in-a-rainstorm.-14333.html
This would be something like 2 or 3 stars to me because of the general lack of focus (sharpness) but because of the unique setting with the rainbow straight into the town the contrast between the dark clouds and the yellow corn it get's a bonus star which would mean 3 or 4.

I agree with Martin on that photo. The picture is somewhat interesting to me because of the image of the rainbow, but the center tends to blur a bit. Plus, the overall theme lacks something in the interest department. I thought it worth two or three stars.
I enjoy hearing from Inzhagi, but to be honest, I do not see the attributes that he is trying to describe in the photos that he mentions. I may return to those and rate them later, but so far, I just do not see the significance in those specific pictures.
It is wonderful to see so much discussion about the different photos. I hope that we can continue with this. It is wonderful to hear all of the opinions.

Hi Russ
About Inzaghis picutres.... Some of those he mentioned are really underestimated IMHO. (mt. sinai, Amsterdam, night hawkers, gondola) But most people here don't like detail shots, shots that you have to think about, shots that you have to look at a little longer to get the message.
Some of these pictures really should be much bigger to get a good feeling. This is one of the biggest problems here on GLOBOsapiens. If you get a picture wich is quite dark or has a lot of shadow in it you will never get the message because they need a much bigger size to really get to work. (forum romanum for example) Just imagine these picture in a poster format hanging at your office wall....
Some of the pics are not well linked, I did relink the amsterdam one. I don't really know what inzaghi meant with the "picture-smiles" because I don't see any antics in the linked picture.
What is generally liked here on GLOBOsapiens are straightforward scenic pictures. Pictures with a clear subject and a clear message. Pictures with an artistic approach are not liked.

Hi GLOBO's
I did post a summary of the general opinion about picture rating but didn't get any response other than Hugh's (thanks hugh) yet....
What do you think about the summary? Do you think this could be posted in the FAQ forum as general a rating aid?

... good ideas and basics discussed above. I withdraw my idea of a zero rating, if it cannt be an option in the list then rating one-star is better than not rating at all. Martin, your last summary was basically OK and ripe for the FAQ file, it can always be refined/edited. A summary could be (war-of-words I suppose):
First judge a pictures according to technical quality. Consider focus, lighting, colour, shading, contrast and composition;
* poor (common snap)
** nice (mediocre)
*** good (interesting)
**** very good (great)
***** excellent (amougst the best)
Before rating, one may adjust ones own value of a picture by adding or deducting a star (or even two) for creativity, originality and even artistic value. When rating, always keep in mind that this is a travel site, pictures here should show the diversity of places, nature, our world and its people, less close details or our personal everyday life. See Pictures-of-the-Month for the best examples of excellent pictures. [ This Message was edited by: rangutan on 2004-11-12 07:31 ] --- Rudolf "Rangutan" Graspointner
