Jul 28, 2024 12:00 AM Roti Vendor, Luang Prabang Night Market
Video clips of a roti vendor at the Luang Prabang Night Market, capturing some of the roti dough flipping/forming technique in slow motion. From the video, it looks like the griddle frying uses both oil and margarine. Whereas the Malaysians and Singaporeans prefer their ‘roti canai’ savory with a curry dipping sauce as an appetizer, the Thais and Laotians prefer their roti as a sweet dessert, either plain with sweetened condensed milk and sugar, or with sliced banana & Nutella with a drizzle of sweetened condensed milk. The savory version with a side of grilled satay skewers is my favorite but I’ve learned to also love the sweet version after trips to Thailand & Laos.

Jul 26, 2024 10:00 PM Asia Hotel Near Bangkok’s Ratchathewi BTS Station
Located next to the Ratchathewi BTS station on Phaya Thai Road, it is walking distance from MBK Center, the MRT station and the Khlong Saen Saep Boat (Golden Mount Line) canal taxi’s Saphan Hua Chang Pier. There are very good street food vendor stalls a few doors down from the hotel plus a 7-Eleven, massage parlors and restaurants nearby. Highly recommended as a convenient place to stay in Bangkok. Adjacent to the hotel’s lobby entrance and garage, Soi Phayanak is a small but very interesting side street to check out with great local color and street vendors plus restaurants.

Jul 26, 2024 10:00 PM Cold River Hotel, Near the Nam Khan River in Luang Prabang
Located on a quiet alley off of Phommathat Road southeast of Mount Phousi Hill and just west of the Nam Khan River, Cold River Hotel guesthouse was my accommodations for the 1st four nights in Laos. It is located about a 10 minute walk from Sisavangvong Street and about 15 minutes walk to the heart of the night market, though only five minutes from the evening food vendors on the Nam Khan Riverside. At around 5 am the procession of monks from the nearby temples can be seen begging for morning alms on Phrommathat Road at the entrance to the alley. Two family restaurants are located next to and across from Cold River Hotel, with the open air Hom Yen Food restaurant having good khao piak noodles for 30,000 Kips, and a friendly family puppy too.

Jul 21, 2024 10:00 PM A Bangkok Trip in Video Clips
A collection of fairly short video clips (6 to about 25 seconds or so in duration) of a bit over six days spent in Bangkok bracketing 13 days in northern Laos, appearing in sequential order. The first clips are from my roughly 1-1/2 day layover in Bangkok’s Don Mueang neighborhood, followed by 5 days and change mainly in Bangkok’s Ratchathewi neighborhood, with visits to the Ladmayom floating marker, Khlong Toei wet market, Nana Plaza (no cameras allowed), Soi Cowboy (cameras allowed outside only), and assorted wanderings around the city on and off the well-beaten tourist track to take in and capture a bit on the city’s local color. Unfortunately, the last clip of the taxi drop off at Survanabhumi International for the 20-hour flight back to LAX caught the metallic scuffling of my iPhone lanyard due to taxi vibrations. Enjoy!

Jul 09, 2024 10:00 PM Kuang Si Waterfall, Southwest of Luang Prabang Laos
Video clips and photos of the three main tiers and cascades of Kuang Si Waterfall, a popular tourist attraction roughly 30 km due southwest of Luang Prabang, Laos. The falls are fed by the Nam Xi (Nam Si) River, with the tallest cascade being 60 m, and the azure and turquoise hues of the pools beneath the picturesque cascades owing to the calcium carbonate particles suspended in the water.
