Jun 17, 2024 10:00 PM The White Hmong village of Ban Aya, Phongsali Province, Laos
A walkthrough tour of the ethnic White Hmong village of Ban Aya, located on Road #1B south of Bountai, in Laos' northern Phongsali province, near the ethnic Akha Chupia village of Ban Sanomai that we had just visited. It was the first time I had seen the foot-powered mortar and pestle setup used for milling rice in person.

Jun 15, 2024 10:00 PM The Luang Prabang, Laos Street Food Scene
Video clips and photos of the Luang Prabang, Laos' street food scene, including vendor stalls at the Luang Prabang Night Market and Morning Market, sidewalk, curbside and alleyway vendor stalls, and a restaurant on Sisavangvong Street whose kitchen wok burner sits next to an open window adjacent to the sidewalk, treating me to the enticing chili-spiked aroma of Thai pad kra pow moo as I shot the video. Footage and photos taken between November 24 - 27, 2023, and December 3 - 6, 2023.

Jun 13, 2024 10:00 PM Bangkok’s Watthana Nan Market, Don Mueang District
Bangkok’s Watthana Nan Market (291/31 Song Prapha Rd., Don Mueang Bangkok 10210), which was a couple of doors down from the Moca Hotel that I stayed at during my ‘One Night (Layover) in Bangkok’, with the balcony of my hotel room looking down into part of the market’s covered, yet open air sections. These larger combination ‘wet and general goods’ market, which includes some cooked food and snacks vendor stalls and perhaps a coffee shop are found thought Bangkok, with the main aisle used as covered alleyway for motor scooter and foot traffic during the evening ‘after-hours’, and during the busy parts of the day are a good place to take in the local color.

Jun 12, 2024 10:00 PM Laos-China Railway Train from Luang Prabang to Oudomxay
A collection of short video clips taken from the Laos-China Railway's higher-speed rail (HSR) service from Luang Prabang to Oudomxay (Muang Xay). The route goes through the mountains, thus much of the journey is through tunnels and sections of high reinforced embankments broken up by brief views of lush picturesque mountains, upland rice ('dry rice') paddies and the occasional village or town. The rail line runs from Vientaine to Boten and was opened on 3 December 2021.

Jun 12, 2024 10:00 PM A Walk Along Rural Road #13 - Oudomxay, Laos
A walk along Oudomxay's Road #13, which when heading due northwest of the intersection with Road #2E soon turns from urban to rural environs as it roughly follows the course of the Nam Ko River and passes a couple of Lao roadhouses and a ethnic Khmu village, and likely a Hmong village further up the road, given that I saw some girls in traditional Hmong-style attire walking in that direction. I stopped in front of a modern style roadside home of a friendly Khmu family that graciously allowed me to come onto their property to have a look around and take some photos and video clips of the picturesque rural view afforded by the back of their house, with a couple of friendly Khmu guys doing a bit of day drinking kindly offering me some Beer Lao on ice, which regretfully I had to decline assuming that the ice was made from unpurified tap water. On the walk back into town, I sidetracked up a dirt and gravel road that ran the length of a quaint Khmu village, having some brief but pleasant interactions with the locals before grabbing a Beer Lao and some snacks at on of the roadhouses.

Jun 10, 2024 10:00 PM Bangkok’s Khlong Ladmayom (Lat Mayom) Floating Market
Located in west Bangkok, the Khlong Ladmayom (Lat Mayom) Floating Market provides the visitor to the city a much closer and less touristy alternative to journeying farther afield to the more famous and tourist-oriented Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. Ladmayom's Zone 1, located near Bang Ramat Road, concentrates mainly on food vendors and pier-side eateries, in addition to a small number of food vendors on boats making the rounds, and is also where the long-tail boat khlong tours depart from. The other five zones of Ladmayom sell other goods and items such as housewares, hardware, clothing and handicrafts. Individual long-tail boat seats can be purchased for group tours of the surrounding khlongs (canals), or a long-tail boat with driver can be personally hired for a private khlong tour.

Jun 10, 2024 10:00 PM Street Food Vendors Near Bangkok’s Asia Hotel
When in Bangkok, the street food vendor stalls near the Asia Hotel on Phaya Thai Road, a short walk south of the Rachathewi BTS station, are well-worth checking out. The main street food vendor stall with a large menu is located near the 7-Eleven near the south side of the Asia Hotel building, whose nightly pop-up kitchen includes propane wok, stock pot and grill burners, plus charcoal-fired ceramic clay pot stoves and charcoal grills, turning out classic Thai street dishes like salt-crusted grilled tilapia, pad see ew, kor moo yang, grilled jumbo prawns, grilled and/or fried pork intestines and such, in addition to the 'holy trinity' of Singha, Chang & Leo. There is also a tropical fruit vendor stall selling fresh durian and mangosteen for dessert, plus a fresh coconut juice vendor.

Jun 10, 2024 10:00 PM The Ban Chan Pottery Village, Across the Mekong from Luang Prabang
For those traveling to Luang Prabang that may have an interest in traditional ceramics or pottery, a visit to the Ban Chan Pottery Village is definitely worth considering. The village is located across the Mekong River from Luang Prabang, and my visit to it was part of a half-day tour by tuku-tuk & auto ferry that also took in some historic temples and a Hmong village on the more rural/less developed far bank of the Mekong. Visitors can walk through the large workshop floor and watch pottery being thrown & ceramic tiles being fabricated, followed by the finished products showroom, and then out to where the local clay is extracted and the ceramic items are fired in large kilns. Note that a change in wind direction can briefly make the pottery village center’s open compound a bit smoky.

Jun 09, 2024 10:00 PM The Akha Puli Tribal Village of Ban Tu Lau Sen Kau
A walk-through tour and lunch with the village Chief at the Akha Puli subgroup tribal village of Ban Tu Lau Sen Kau, also located on Road #1B south of the town of Bountai in the Phongsali province of northern Laos. This was the third and final village visit of the day before first stopping in Bountai to drop off a second local guide that had accompanied us for the morning's village tour itinerary and to change drivers, and then to continue due northeast along Road #1B to the town of Phongsali. Whereas the other ethnic villages visited bordered the shoulder of Road #1B, Ban Tu Lau Sen Kau village was located on the crest of a hill some distance up from the road, with the trail leading to it fairly steep.

Jun 09, 2024 10:00 PM The Akha Chupia Village of Ban Sanomai, Phongsali Province
Northern Laos’ Phongsali province is one of the regions where the ethnic minority Akha people live, with a number of Akha villages fronting Road #1B and Road #2E which are easily accessible for guided visits to allow one to experience the culture and daily lifestyles of the different tribal groups. The first of one such morning walk-through tours that I did during my first day in Phongsali province was the ‘Akha Chupia’ subgroup tribal village of Ban Sanomai, located on Road #1B south of the town of Bountai. The village included an elementary school and a health clinic that also serves the surrounding villages in the area. Our arrival time allowed us to briefly observe a couple of class sessions followed by some outdoor calisthenics lead by one of the teachers.
