Jun 19, 2010 02:00 PM Nairobi to Mombasa
like I say, nothing is ever like they say.. there are NO 6am buses.(only really crappy ones)--do not take those buses!--the locals don't even like these buses.
the times the good buses usually leave are around 8am and 9- 9:30am even if the sign says otherwise.
take one of these buses, North Coast, mash, Crown, pay 800sh/pp for normal bus. (no air etc.)-the bus is still relatively comfortable and fast 8hrs to Mombasa- a couple of stops and they give you water.
there is another bus you can take with many comforts (air etc.) for approx.12-1500sh.

they say the bus leaves at 6am and to take the best one.. Crown. We will see--nothing is ever as they say!

Jun 17, 2010 02:00 PM Hello Nairobi good bye wallet cont'd
Good morning, turning out to be a beautiful day today. Am sitting at the internet cafe in the YMCA awaiting for a phone call from the bank to get some emergency $. So far the trip has been interesting. Already 5days gone and nothing accomplished. 21/2 days on the plane, 2days stuck waiting for $. Can you believe I was robbed right at the immigration office while applying to extend my visa! took everything except my PP. oh well no use crying over spilt milk.grin and bear it.. move on.
Seems the plans have changed a little though. since I must be in Nairobi to pick up the visa on Thurs next week, I think we will just cruise up and down the coast visiting mombasa, Malindi, and maybe just a few other places kenya.. no set plans.. depends on when the $ arrives.
have a great day!

Jun 13, 2010 02:00 PM Time to scratch my itchy feet!
Good health and high spirits! 7:30am, just finishing up some paperwork for my trip, do some last minute shopping then catch my flight at 6:20pm. Route=Winnipeg>Ottawa>London>Cairo>Nairobi arrival time --hopefully 3:35am Wednesday June 16.
A couple of days in the city then southbound to Victoria Falls, don't know what direction we're going yet, will figure that out when we begin. Either Arusha to Mbeya through Zambia or down the coast to Mozambique, through SA **couple days of FIFA** then up through Botswana Zambia and Malawi.. All depends on time.
Have an awesome day/night everyone. Catch ya on the flip side!

Mar 02, 2010 07:00 PM Home to Canada
Well, you can all note that at the border crossing to Kenya, the visa fee is $25!! you stop on the TZ side get your stamp, then walk across to the Kenyan side and get the stamp/visa. the road to Nairobi sucks big time. 90% of it is under construction very bumpy and dusty but still made it by 8:30pm.
stayed at the YMCA thoroughly enjoyed their free breakfast, there buffet lunch, not free but very very good.
Ate at the Carnivore Restaurant, a must for the meat lovers out there! It's a set menu with soup, buns, then a huge tray of salads an sauces. These guys in hats with big skewers walk around and ask if you want what ever meat they are touting. ostrich, crocodile, lamb, beef, pork, chicken, etc.. so much.. it's an all you can eat deal. and when you have had enough, you put down this white flag that is on your table for a sign of surrender! then they ask if you want dessert!
also managed to eat at Habesa Ethiopian Rest. again awesome. Had the dinner spread out nicely in the garden many different things to choose from... then it poured rain! oh well the food was still great!
Being in Nairobi for a couple of days I am able to check it out a bit more. The one thing I can say it that HOLY SHIT IT'S BIG!~!! We went to visit a friend at a university and it was a 40km ride--still in the city!!! and the traffic here is horrendous too many traffic jams. However it is a nice change from the traffic in say Dars or Arusha because people don't lean on the horn as much here. It's a nice sorta organized confusion.. :O)
very good cyber cafe here at MAPESA AGENT--Mumbu telecentre. very fast. located by the Africa Cafe/barclay plaza Koinange st.
just waiting to catch my flight at 10:50pm arrive home tomorrow at 5:30pm.

Feb 28, 2010 07:00 PM waiting for bus to Nairobi!
Hanging around Arusha on sunday. Checking out the scenery and local flavor. rained for a good 3hrs straight.. heavy rain.. nice and refreshing though. Bags were brought in from Dars by a friend, saved over 150000 for the tickets and hotel to rtn myself. cancelled the flight from Dars to Nairobi, and am going to take the Arusha shuttle instead --leaves at 2pm 20000/person. must pay for Kenyan transit visa at the border they say $20 but I paid $10 at the airport so I wonder if the price is being inflated?
Will arrive at Nairobi about 7-8pm. stay at the YWCA. Hope to eat at a good Ethiopian restaurant and at the Carnivore Restaurant if it is worth it.
