Beijing travel tips

Quanjude
This is the restaurant for Peking Duck. Originally opened in 1864, it created the dish Westerners now call Peking duck. It has survived world wars, a civil war, a Communist government, and is now a legitimate tourist attraction, popular with Chinese and foreigners alike. Expect to wait up to an hour and a half to be seated, and once inside, the price will blow your doors off, as each duck costs about 200 RMB ($30 US), which for a meal anywhere in China is very expensive. However, even with the long wait and high prices, it is a must see and do on any trip to Beijing. more

Summer Palace
In present shape it was enlarged by empress Cixi. It was the place where royality took refuge from insufferable summer haet that roasted Forbidden City. Place is dominated by temples, gardens, pavilions, lakes and corridors. Also here is the most crazy idea of Cixi - the marble boat. The most famous places are - hall of Benevolence and Longevity, Buddist Fragrance Pavilion, Cloud Dispelling Hall, Temple of the sea of Windsom, Marble Boat and Dragon King Temple. You can easily spend there all day. Better avoid weekends - it is getting very crowdy. The complex is located outside the city centre - take the subway to the Woudaoukou station, then the taxi shouldn't be more than 20 yuan. Attention complex has few gates. Entrance fee 60 yuan, opening hours 8.30- 17.00 more

Guan Yuan, China Children's Center
Anyone in China should attend a Chinese Opera at least once. All the pieces are from ancient China. They only use 4 different characters which one can identify by the makeup. The four characters were traditionally played by men, now women have been introduced in the theater. All actors are also accrobats and the kungfu stunts are very impressive. The costumes are colorful and the percussions are hypnotizing. Pekin operas have been around for more than 200 yrs. The Guan Yuan Theater was built for Chairman Mao in the late 1960's. more

Surprise
This bar restaurant is located in the famous Hutong district where you can see old Beijing, though nowadays it is filled with trendy bars, pubs and restaurants on the main road along the lake side. About 20m away from the main street on one of the side streets, you will find this quiet restaurant in red. Inside, it is decorated with photos of other parts in China. The waitress told me that they are from her photography teacher, but I forgot to ask whether he is the owner. She is nice and friendly, explaining us their special dishes. They serve Sichuan food and self-made noodle. The portion is not big but delicious, with own recipes and a bit of fusion style. The atmosphere is good. Only cash is accepted. It has been open a few months before I was there in Sept 2007. more
