Dolwyddelan Castle |

This is a castle missed by many who speed through the village on their way to Ffestiniog and the south from Bettws-y-Coed. If you are only interested in grand buildings [ruined or otherwise] you may as well give it a miss.
However for those who have any interest in the history of the early medieval conflicts between the Welsh Princes and the English Kings, this is well worth the walk off the road because, unlike the far grander castles of Caernarvon, Beaumaris and Conway, it wasn't built as an English fortress after victory to keep the Welsh in subjection but one of the few remaining Welsh castles.
The website is very good indeed and shows you that there is plenty still to see; far more than enough to justify a stop.
