Hey Rudi

What a lenghty answer... You really do a great deal for our community...

about rounding of the ratings...

http://www.globosapiens.net/mortimer/picture-copenhagen-opera...-4-21497.html

Right now has got 8 Votes averaging 3.12 but shows 4 stars...

Just liked to point it out ;-)

@ all

just don't make yourself crazy about those ratings, of course it's nice to see nice pictures coming up on top of the list but after all when looking for information about a particular place you'd like to visit you'll go through those pictures that concern you... I don't know how many people check out the general picture list.

I am thankful to all of you for the discussions that we are having. This brings out several thoughts for me:

Kris, it is wonderful that you have renewed energy for rating the photos. We need all of us to consistently check in and rate as much as we are able.

Rudi, your repsonse was lengthy and full of information, as always. I do want to disagree with you about one thing. I do not beive that we do justice to any picture or report unless there are 60 - 100 ratings of each. Only 10 - 20 does not do justice. There are more than 100 of us who have above 500 points, now, so we each have a responsibility to keep this site in a proper order. We all have the responsibility of controling the proper ratings.

Martin, the original discussion that we had last summer regarding rating was very important to me. Because of that discussion, I believe that I have been able to contribute more higher-rated photos and have been able to be more consistent of rating other photos. That, plus our discussion on rating travel reports, contributed to the new travel reports that I submitted over these past two weeks. Of course, I would not want to forget the wonderful examples brought forth by David and Misty (Amanda).

By the way, have all of you seen the photos from the new member, Deriek-2, especially those of St. Petersburgh? What a wonderful start for a new member.

Please help me interpret some information that I see against pictures.

http://www.globosapiens.net/akhila/picture-baltimore-skyline3-27565.html

Uploaded: Nov, 14 2005 | Taken: Nov, 13 2005| Viewed: 2 times | 5 votes

What does the Viewed and Voted mean?

It says 5 votes, but Viewed only 2 times (?????) Is there a way to vote without Viewing the picture.

Shouldn't the number of ViewedTimes be more that the number of Votes?

Any input in helping me understand this will be appreciated.

Thanks

Akhila

Hi Akhila

That's an interesting feauture you noticed. As far as I know does the view counter only count when somebody clicks on the picture itself or on the enlarge to size L button and not on the text. So viewed is only counting when a pop up box opens the picture.

hope this helps

Hi Martin,

This information is really neat. I've never actually clicked on a picture - always on the text. It was really cool to see a much larger size of the picture and the exact ratings - not just the ****.

I guess I will enjoy this site even more now.

Thanks again

Akhila

After hot debate at www.globosapiens.net/topic-globo-policy-to-observe-rules-of-restric..._36_2084.html I notice we have not mentioned TEXT here. Should text be a criterion when rating a picture? I think so. Just as pictures are considered in reports both the title and description are part of a picture! A wrong bad or extreamly long title, or a picture uploaded to the wrong destination should loose a star, also possibly another star if the description is too personal, offending or unsuitable. RR

P.S: some members don't read the descriptions. By clicking on the icon(mini) of the picture they just are not shown (also not in slideshows). That is a pity, they should. To read the description one must click on the title and scroll down on the next page!

After www.globosapiens.net/topic-new-protection-agains-rating-fraud_29_2113_0020.html we should have a world on how NOT to rate pictures!

One should not let past experiences or fears neither bad conditions or symbols (like ice cold weather) make us degrade a perfect travel picture.

What are the criteria members should NOT consider when rating:

- NOT beauty and colour and peace only

- NO comparison with other professional shots from the press

- WITHOUT political, religious or any other status in mind

- not WHOEVER/HOWEVER a member uploaded

- free of PAST FEELINGS (eg. fears, hate, disorder, bugs, bad experiences...)

- NOT against the average, just personal exact rating

If every one rated against the average then all pictures will be plain ***!

What are the criteria members should best consider when rating:

1. travel worth

2. focus

3. light/colour & contrast

4. composition

5. texture/depth/subject

6. theme/originality

7. correct destination/title

8. description

9. format

10. other

but perhaps TRAVEL WORTH (travel relation incl. Travel-target) is the most important when choosing between 4* and 5* and also between 1* and *2 because those are VERY important decisions. If confused, rate 2-4 from gut! The average of 10+ members heads towards a good average, 20+ members certain and 30+ members accurate but will change always with time!

Why do we travel? All these should be considered too, not only to see lovely panoramas!

- adventure

- new business & job opportunities

- as political or economical refugees

- engagement in war / military reasons

- diplomatic or religious missions

- entertainment (shows / exhibitions)

- (beach) holidays

- sport experiences or events

- private / medical reasons

I try rate according to my current mood and prefere always that which I like when travelling but the unknown and imaginable too. Together with good technical quality, so pictures from my own visions of travel can always expect that * extra, specially:

Other Cultures and languages

Extreme climatic conditions

Wild animals and exotic plants

Remote places

Enormous Old and Modern Structures

Historical footsteps

About the Famous and Infamous

Sport and Recreation

EVERYBODY will always rate differently, we are so diverse around the earth and our fields. That one RATES is important, an average after 20+ counts most. It is a shame that only 1:1000 members dare to rate, so those few that do determine the current rating!

Small basis, let us extend and improve and also critisize this above, that which we learn at GLOBO is from YOU too .....

Hi There

Rudi this is a very lengthy analysis of the rating process and a very good guideline for everybody to follow.

Some thoughts about picture rating and taking...

The point of origniality is something that came up once and again and was also the suject of the forum topic which made you write this above entry.

I would like to have some more thoughts about this... Originality: how can we achieve it and what common mistakes do we make when taking shots?

It is not only about getting the never seen shot up on Globo, because to get it, I can go to a place from where nobody has uploaded a picture to the globo database, take a shot and upload it. Does this qualify for 5 stars?

This would make us have only those pics, from places that only few people can go to, on the first pages, but are they truly the very best pictures in our database?

I would like to have the very best pictures first. I always think when giving 5 stars does this picture belong among the finest ones we already have in our database... Often this makes me reduce the rating by one or even two stars.

So orignial shots... how do do it? Go to a place and take a shot whenever you get the feeling this place/scene is worthy to remember forever... try to capture the feeling it provoked so that you can always go through those emotions whenever you look at the shot again. If you can achieve this, most probably others are likely to be able to feel the same thing.

And some thoughts about original scenes... As David was mentioning clichés in pictures in his post here: http://www.globosapiens.net/topic-cliches-in-photos_46_1734_0000.html

Yes we want those clichés. That's what we know about those places. That's what we would like to see for ourselfes... we need those shots too! The fact that a lot of people took the same shots, or the fact that they are on postcards means, that they most probably are the most interesting shots possible of the particular place.

It's our duty to give those cliché shots a personal note make them special and try to get a feeling in them... that is truly difficult.

Another point about originality... Zoo pictures... I don't find them very original because they are something very artificial... And another item: miniature or reproduction pictures (miniature parks, playlands, parks...) they are only reproductions of well known scenes... Another Item I don't find very original...

These are some of my thougts about pictures and the ratings they achieve.

I will try to find some examples of shots that I think would belong nearer to the top of the gallery and some of those that I think would belong lower... Just to illustrate my point of view.

Have a great day

Martin
